How do we define systems which design is dependent on but not predetermined by? Can we work within that degree of freedom and produce a critical and coherent product? The Irving Innovation Fellowship provides a platform for the development of these research interests and their respective applicability to the studio-based design process. This exhibit, Rules of Possibility: Constructing Design Systems, showcases outcomes of that research which target open-ended design questions driven by process rather than product.

Outlines of each iteration are shown behind the final folded surface. Paint allows for easier reading of each transformation.

This exhibit utilized the ideas developed as part of the Plywood Napkin research on recursive design techniques to produce one large folded surface.
